APF - Finally there is someone who spoke my language!

Tue 31 May 2022

Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis - We are a growing community of patients, families, researchers and healthcare professionals striving to find a cure for pulmonary fibrosis so that everyone affected by the disease has a better future.

We support patients and families and raise awareness of pulmonary fibrosis through campaigning, fundraising and education. We also fund research to improve quality of life for people living with pulmonary fibrosis and to find a cure.

Impact of befriending

Susan has been befriending Tricia since 2020. Susan is a peer volunteer and has Pulmonary Fibrosis herself- she is a nurse and was told to shield during the first lockdown and although she then switched to helping on an occupational health helpline, she missed patient contact and decided to support Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis as a  befriender. Susan was matched with Tricia and continues to provide weekly calls to Tricia, providing a listening ear supporting through her worries and fears.  The calls help Tricia to feel less alone and Tricia has said “when I was first contacted by Susan, it was like I had been in a foreign country and was meeting someone who finally spoke my language”.  Tricia has found the calls invaluable right from the start she says,  “we were on the same page, and she fully understood all the problems I had encountered with my condition”. Tricia very much looks forward to the frequent calls”.
