Quality of the Moment: Working 1:1 With People With Dementia - A Training Toolkit
This is a 120-page Toolkit in a photocopiable, ring binder format produced by Befriending Network Scotland in partnership with Alzheimer Scotland.
Befriending is an important intervention for people with dementia as it offers something other than a clinical approach. It offers people with dementia a human touch, someone there to talk to and to listen; someone whose role is to look for the person and not focus on the disease. In the vast majority of cases befriending is provided by volunteers, everyday people from all walks of life who are motivated to give their time, their support and their care to others.
This Training Toolkit will give Befriending Coordinators the tools and confidence they need to prepare their volunteer befrienders for the challenges and the rewards of this valuable work and the good practice guidelines that go along with it will ensure that projects feel they are able to put best practice into place. Although the toolkit was designed with befriending in mind it is a valuable resource for anyone training people to work 1:1 with clients with dementia.
Contents include:
Understanding Befriending and Its Role in Supporting People with Dementia; Demystifying Dementia; Building Relationships with Carers; Relationships with Befriendees; Communicating; Getting Support; Reacting to, Reporting & Recording Change

Quality of the Moment: Working 1:1 with People with Dementia - Good Practice Guidelines
Befriending Network Scotland and Alzheimer Scotland were commissioned by the Scottish Government to put together a set of good practice guidelines to guide the work of befriending projects working with people with dementia. The newly revised and rewritten BNS Befriending Code of Practice covers practice very thoroughly but we felt that there were some areas where practice might differ slightly, when working with clients with dementia, or where more detailed guidance might be required, it is these things that we cover in this document.
These Good Practice Guidelines are also intended to supplement the Quality of the Moment Working 1:1 with People with Dementia, Training Toolkit, which they were written in conjunction with.

The Befriending Code of Practice (electronic version)
Befriending service clients are among the most vulnerable people in our society. It is essential therefore for anyone managing or running a befriending project to be accountable, to be very clear about what befriending involves and to know what constitutes good practice.
The fully revised Code of Practice describes the main issues which projects need to consider; sets out minimum standards which ensure safe and competent practice; makes suggestions to help projects develop good practice; gives good practice examples and provides case studies.
By breaking down befriending into four main areas: Running A Befriending Project; Managing Befrienders; Clients and Matches, the Code of Practice covers all aspects of running a befriending project including: governance, recommended befriender:staff ratios, policies and procedures, monitoring and evaluation, recruiting and selecting befrienders, training befrienders, supporting and supervising befrienders, client referrals and assessments, managing waiting lists, matching, setting and maintaining boundaries, checklists on policies, project documentation, forms, befriender training topics and useful websites.
Befriending Code of Practice (hard copy)
Hard-copy version of downloadable resource. Priced to be affordable to anyone in the sector, the hard copy costs just as much (more or less) to print out at work as it does to order from BNS – and you get a full-colour, professionally printed, spirally bound publication to boot.
