Leeds Mind

Leeds Mind Befriending is a social support service for people over the age of 50, who are experiencing mental ill health, loneliness and isolation. Referrals can be made by the individual or with help from a family member or professional.

After a short referral form has been completed, you will be contacted to arrange an assessment and have a conversation around safety plans, your interests, hobbies and availability. You'll be matched with one of our friendly, trained volunteers, and you'll receive 1 hour of support per week for up to 6 months, working together with your personal support plan in mind.

Information for volunteers

Leeds Mind Befriending is a social support service for people over the age of 50, who are experiencing mental ill health, loneliness and isolation.

Befriending volunteers (any age, 18+) will provide one to one social support to clients in their homes, in the community, via telephone or online. This could be anything from a chat over a cuppa to a trip to a local art gallery or museum. The support will take place for 1 hour a week, for a minimum of 6 months. Over the 6 months, volunteers will help clients reach some personal goals, with ongoing support from the Befriending Project Coordinator.

One of our previous befriending volunteers, Charlotte, said: “I’d highly recommend volunteering as a Befriender, it’s such a wonderful experience and is super rewarding. I volunteered during the first lockdown, and it gave me a real focus each week and sense of routine which in turn helped with my own wellbeing. It’s a great way to share positive experiences and it’s lovely meeting someone new who you’d perhaps not cross paths with day to day.”

Before beginning the support, full training will be given to all volunteers.
