Sight Support Derbyshire

Our Befriending Service is for visually impaired people in Derby and Derbyshire who are over 50. Our aim is to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation and improve wellbeing.
Our volunteers will visit service users at home and provide companionship and friendship. They will also be able to help with small practical tasks such as reading and responding to correspondence and can help with shopping or accompanying to appointments. As our volunteers will be going into peoples homes and getting to know them well, they will also be able to identify any further areas of support that may be needed and refer these back to Sight Support Derbyshire staff to be followed up.

Information for volunteers

Our trained volunteers primarily support the Befriending Service but will also help support the social activities we offer. We have a social timetable of activities for adults and children where volunteer support is needed. This could be a walk, a visit to a historical site, a cafe and cream tea visit, a theatre visit or trip to a theme park.
We also offer a telephone befriending service where this is preferred or if it is not possible to find a suitable volunteer in the right geographical area.
