Cancer Support Scotland

Our free ‘Here for You’ befriending service provides people affected by cancer with regular contact with one of our highly skilled volunteers who will provide a friendly listening ear. The aim of our telephone befriending is to reduce feelings of social isolation and loneliness, giving you someone out with your family and friends to speak openly with.

Our Befrienders can call weekly, fortnightly or monthly giving you the time and space to talk about your feelings. They can also help signpost to other wellbeing services Cancer Support Scotland provide including free counselling and Stress Management workshops. Our Befrienders will also help you to access any other additional cancer related support services.

This service is available free to anyone affected by cancer in Scotland over the age of 18 including carers and family members.

Information for volunteers

The ‘Here for You’ service has been specifically developed in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of the virus has seen increased levels of stress, fear, anxiety, loneliness, and social isolation. Being affected by cancer can also cause an increase in levels of stress, fear, and anxiety.

The purpose of this role is to offer a friendly chat to people new to Cancer Support Scotland that request the befriending service, to people that have had ongoing support throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and people who have been accessing our services and now wish extra informal support from a befriender.

The calls provide the person affected by cancer someone out with their family and friends that they can speak with openly and without bias. The aim is to help them regain their confidence, share discussions around interests, talk openly about their feelings and help them reconnect with the outside world if they have been shielding during COVID-19.

We are looking for people who can volunteer a couple of hours a week from home between our office hours (Mon-Fri, 9-5pm, Thursday Evenings or Saturday Mornings) to provide these befriending calls which offer vital wellbeing support to people affected by cancer in Scotland.
