East London Cares

Love Your Neighbour is East London Cares' friendship matching scheme, bringing together older (65+) and younger neighbours (18-64) in Hackney and Tower Hamlets. If you are over 65, and live in Hackney or Tower Hamlets, we may be able to match you with a younger neighbour to build friendship and spend time together one-to-one.

Older and younger neighbours are matched up based on location, interests and personality, your match will then visit you once a week for a chat. After time you both might want to get and about and enjoy all that Tower Hamlets and Hackney have to offer – whether that's the cinema, the theatre, or our brilliant parks and museums.

The programme aims to bridge divides that can make London an isolating and lonely place for younger and older neighbours alike. Through conversation, company and companionship, younger and older neighbours can support one another to stay vibrant, visible and connected. It's mutually beneficial: younger and older neighbours share stories, advice, skills, laughter and new experiences.

As well as Love Your Neighbour, East London Cares run free social clubs every month, where neighbours can get together in a group and share laughter over an activity or a cup of coffee. We host around 12 changing social clubs a month, ranging from talks from local artists, to online dance classes, seated yoga, mindfulness sessions and much more.

Information for volunteers

Love Your Neighbour is East London Cares' friendship matching scheme, bringing older and younger neighbours together to spend time one-to-one. Our volunteers (younger neighbours) are usually in their 20s, 30s and 40s, and get involved in the programme to meet an older neighbour in their local community.

Older and younger neighbours are matched up based on location, interests and personality. They get together once a week and build friendships that help bring a little of the outside world in for older neighbours who can struggle to get out. Younger neighbours can also support their older neighbours to get and about and enjoy all that Tower Hamlets and Hackney have to offer – whether that's the cinema, the theatre, or our brilliant parks and museums.
