Fife Centre for Equalities

FCE started the Minority Ethnic 60+ Project in July 2020 because many minority ethnic older people in Fife were unable to access information and support due to language barrier and Covid restrictions. The older people expressed that they would welcome befrienders who share their language and have good understanding of their culture. Some of them feel lonely even though they may live with their family. Some live on their own and their family live in other towns/cities.

Information for volunteers

We are looking for volunteers from diverse language and cultural backgrounds. Volunteers will be given training and 1 to 1 support from our staff. We anticipate that the volunteers can call either by telephone or video their older person each week for a conversation. The volunteers could also have 1 to 1 outing with the older person if they feel confident to do so. Due to cultural reasons, we may require matching volunteer of the same sex as the older person.
