Information for volunteers

Birchfield Big Local Befriending Buddies offers a low-level telephone befriending service for older residents (50+) living in the Birchfield area who are at risk of social isolation and loneliness including those that are house bound or self-isolating during the Covid-19 pandemic.
As a befriending buddy you will be matched with an older person, to check in and chat with them on a regular basis. The befriending buddy will contact the older person to mutually agree a day and time to call them, once a week, for up to 30 minutes.
A befriending buddy’s role is to provide an opportunity for an older person to develop and build a good rapport with them by taking an interest in the life of the befriendee and providing a listening ear.
The support that telephone befriending buddies offer is vital at this time particularly for those experiencing anxiety and loneliness during the current pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.
By volunteering as a telephone befriending buddy, not only will it provide our volunteers with an opportunity to engage with an older resident but will also help volunteers to learn and develop new skills and to contribute to the community.
