Caraidean Uibhist SCIO

Located in the heart of Balivanich, on the Isle of Benbecula, Caraidean Uibhist is a charitable foundation dedicated to helping those in need across the islands of Berneray, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist, Eriskay and Barra. With the dedication of our befrienders, staff members and partners, we strive to improve the lives of everyone who needs help within the community. Folk can self refer or can be signposted to us by referral agencies within the community - once we have had a chance to have an initial chat we will see what we can do to bring about a positive change to an individuals health and well being.

Information for volunteers

Caraidean Uibhist was formed in 2003 out of a local need to tackle loneliness and isolation in the Uist community (Eriskay, South Uist, Benbecula, North Uist and Berneray). Since then that need has not diminished however our organisation has grown and developed to better tackle loneliness and isolation in all its forms. Today we have service users from each of the island communities mentioned as well as a growing number of volunteers. Our aim is to effectively match volunteers and service users who grow to develop close relationships, improving the quality of life for both parties. This is done through face to face, telephone and online befriending as well as groupwork. In addition, we also offer a specialised substance misuse support service, mental health support, emergency response for individuals living alone and patient escorting in the case of service users needing to attend both on and off island medical appointments.
