National Autistic Society
Moving Forward is a service which supports autistic 16-24 year olds from deprived areas in West Central Scotland. We help people develop social confidence and prepare for work and other positive goals. We can offer you eight group sessions with a staff member with the option of one to one coaching, help finding a work placement, and up to ten weeks support to identify and apply for your preferred opportunities. We can also offer you six months of support from a trained volunteer mentor, who will meet you weekly or fortnightly and help you work towards your goals. To be able to take part, you must fall into the above age range, have a diagnosis of autism, be living in a eligible postcode area, and not in education, employment or training.
Information for volunteers
To mentor a young person, we ask for a commitment of between 2 to 4 hours a week for around 6 months. You will receive training in autism and support skills, then be matched with a young person who has similar interests/personality or availability as yourself. You will meet this young person on a weekly basis and help them achieve their goals - this is likely to be things like learning to travel independently, building confidence and social skills, trying new activities, creating a CV or applying for jobs. You will link in with the project coordinator to monitor progress over the 6 months.
