Good Neighbour Project
Reducing social isolation amongst elderly people in Tunbridge Wells by helping them to be part of the community, remain independent & find purpose for living
Good Neighbours is helping to tackle social isolation amongst the older generation in the Tunbridge Wells area. We help clients reconnect with their local community either through our Befriending service (2006) or Falls Prevention programme (2008).
Our Befriending serivce has helped over 1,000 clients reconnect with their local community. This vital contact not only combats loneliness but also improves their health and self-esteem, many of whom have few if any unpaid visitors.
In the modern world where families are busier and more dispersed, older vulnerable people often need more than just company.
Backed up by the knowledge and professional contacts of our office staff, volunteers can offer information and advocacy when needed or short-term practical help.
The feedback we receive shows how much this is appreciated:
'My aunt considers her volunteer a friend.'
'The visits gave my aunt a sense of value and provided much needed companionship for which we are very grateful.'
'It makes a difference having a visitor to look forward to.'
'You give me confidence to go out when necessary as I am partially sighted...'
Our Falls Prevention Programme was set up to help those who had become housebound either because of a fall or had a fear of falling. It has helped hundreds of clients over the past 10 years to exercise, make lasting friendships and improve their health.
Clients have spoken about the difference attending makes:
'The teachers are wonderful & meeting others certainly keeps your spirits up...'
'It has been very helpful in every way giving me back my confidence, and self-respect, meaning I can move about alone and live my life again.'
'It keeps me going all week!'
We are able to deliver our services through our dedicated team of volunteers. Many are over 65 themselves, but find that helping others keeps them connected, active & healthy too!
