Be Free Young Carers
Be Free YC supports young carers aged between 8-24 across The Vale of the Whitehorse and South Oxfordshire. Young carers often describe their lives as isolated, with high levels of stress. Many fail to achieve academically, struggling to balance school work and caring responsibilities.
Befriending gives young carers 1 to 1 support, positive social interaction and self esteem and reduces the impact of their caring role on health and well being.
Trained, supported volunteers are key to this valuable and rewarding service.
Information for volunteers
Be Free Young Carers is an established Oxfordshire charity that helps young carers aged 8 to 24 flourish as children and young adults whilst coping with the demands of their caring roles.
Help us improve the lives of these vulnerable young people. There are a number of ways you can contribute through volunteering:
Help supervise our young carer trips and activities. We currently arrange 22 trips each year.
Train to be a befriender and build a positive relationship with a young carer to help them overcome the stress and anxiety so many feel.
Our fundraising is vital to our work, help us raise the funds we need to provide the activities for young carers.
You can help by giving a few or as many hours a week or month as you are able. Full training and induction will be given. Two references and an enhanced DBS check is required for roles working directly with young carers.
Current estimates show the number of young carers across Oxfordshire as 13,000, on average 2 in every classroom. Many young carers experience unsettling life changes such as bereavement, family break-up, losing income or housing, and seeing the effects of an illness or addiction on the person they care for. All these things alongside the pressures of school and the social isolation experienced by many, can lead to significant stress, affect their ability to access vital social support and educational opportunities and can have an effect on the choices on offer to them and ultimately their future.
You can make a difference, it's rewarding and effective. Please help us help them, contact Be Free Young Carers on 01235 838 554
