What is Befriending?

Befriending makes a real difference to people's lives, often at a time of change, people aged 18 and over need support of another person to help them through a difficult time. This could be for variety of reasons following separation, domestic abuse, coping with a child with special needs, bereavement, radicalisation are just some reasons but not limited.

What will Telephone Befriending Service provide?

Telephone Befriending is a service provided by a trained befriender who will contact you weekly or fortnightly. BFT will offer you befriending service in your language and with awareness of your cultural needs.

Who are BFT Telephone Befrienders:

Our volunteers are recruited from a range of backgrounds and cultures who provide support and company to anyone in need of regular and friendly telephone chat.

What do BFT volunteers offer:

A friendly chat
Support and a listening ear
Bilingual advocacy

Eligibility criteria includes but is not restricted:

Feeling isolated
Experienced any form of Domestic abuse
Low self esteem/confidence
Have problems but do not know how to sort out or where to begin journey

You can be referred by GP/Social Worker/family services/self referral

Information for volunteers

We are on a rolling programme for volunteer telephone befrienders in different languages but English must be spoken by all.

We offer Community Interpreting Qualification at level 1 and 2 currently exploring level 3 for next year.

We offer a professional training package to our befrienders.

Volunteer from the comfort of your own home working with up to 2 clients (one hour a week).
