Space for Youth Befriending

Space for Youth Befriending recruits, trains and supports volunteers in befriending.

Space for Youth Befriending supports children and young people aged 5-16 years who are affected by parental drug and/or alcohol use in Edinburgh.

Information for volunteers

The Organisation asks for volunteers to commit to 2-3 hours a week, for 12 months from the completion of mandatory training.

Volunteers are supported by a project worker who will provide help & advice on any concerns, but also give ideas of fun things to do with your young person. Support can be accessed by telephone, email and face-to-face from your dedicated project worker and volunteer group forums. Volunteers are provided with expenses to cover travel and activity costs. There is also training and development opportunities.

We provide a mandatory volunteer induction training programme that covers:
• What is befriending?
• Child protection and boundaries
• Listening skills
• Poverty and deprivation
• Discrimination and prejudice
• Substance Misuse/Feotal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
• Kinship care
• A journey through befriending

Training will take place over the course of a full day.
