Space for Youth Befriending

Space for Youth Befriending recruits, trains and supports volunteers in befriending.

Space for Youth Befriending supports children and young people aged 5-16 years who are affected by parental drug and/or alcohol use in South West Edinburgh.

Information for volunteers

The Organisation asks for volunteers to commit to 2-3 hours a week, for 12 months from completion of mandatory training.
Volunteers are supported by a project worker who will provide help & advice on any concerns, but also to give ideas of fun things to do with your young person. Support can be accessed by telephone, email and face to face from your dedicated project worker and volunteer group forums. Volunteers are provided with expenses to cover travel and activity costs. There is also training and development opportunities.

We provide a mandatory volunteer induction training programme that covers:
• What is befriending?
• Child protection and boundaries
• Listening skills
• Poverty and deprivation
• Discrimination and prejudice
• Substance Misuse/Feotal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
• Kinship care
• A journey through befriending

Training will take place one evening a week over 4 weeks.
