"Satisfaction with the support and supervision they receive is a key factor in keeping people volunteering."
—The Institute for Volunteering Research

What is the purpose of support and supervision for volunteers? What is the difference between support and supervision and when does support become counselling? Do new volunteers take up all your time? Is it difficult to get experienced volunteers to turn up for supervision?

This module will help befriending workers identify the different ways of supporting their befrienders and find the balance that works best for everybody.

By the end of the module participants will have:

- Drawn up a checklist and an agenda for supervision

- Identified what helps people to feel supported

- Looked at why support is offered to volunteers and how this helps them with their roles

- Identified the advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of support

- Identified the skills involved in being a supportive befriending coordinator

- Explored some of the issues that volunteers raise during support and supervision and the emotions that are linked to these issues

- Looked at how to offer support in terms of: Creating the right environment; Finding the right time; Asking the right questions

- Looked at how your feelings can affect the support you give

- A clear picture of what and to record during support and supervision and why

- Explored personal and professional boundaries and what to do when support needs go beyond your remit

Vital Skills is made up of one resource pack (which includes the theory, best practice and advice) and one activity pack where you are asked to put your knowledge to the test. Modules may also have quizzes. All work is accessible online and is marked online. This streamlined format is designed to support your busy schedules. The contact session takes place on Go To Meeting. During this video conference you can compare answers with other organisations, share best practice as well as get feedback on your work.

Both the course work and the webinar are mandatory for achieving the module.
